Insurance for non-EU/EFTA citizens
For citizens of non-EU/EFTA countries
PhD students from outside the European Union are obligated to conclude a voluntary health insurance contract by themselves in the National Health Fund (NFZ) or take out insurance against medical expenses in Poland at any insurance company. Having health insurance is mandatory.
STEPS:
1) Please sign an agreement: a doctoral student must first submit an application in the regional branch of the National Health Fund – Department of the National Health Fund in Kielce, Jana Pawła II 9.
2) After signing the agreement, a doctoral student must submit an application for health insurance to the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) or they can choose a commercial offer.
Attention! The proof of insurance is the contract with the National Health Fund together with the ZUS ZZA form and confirmation of payment of the last contribution.
Foreign Students
You can conclude a voluntary health insurance contract if you are a student, a PhD programme participant studying in Poland, or a graduate undergoing compulsory internship/placement in Poland, and if you are not a national of a Member State of the European Union (EU) or a Member State of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) but residing in the territory of the Republic of Poland.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED TO APPLY FOR VOLUNTARY HEALTH INSURANCE:
- 2 application forms for National Health Fund health insurance cover,
- Your passport,
- Your Student ID Card,
- An official letter from your university confirming that you are a current student, and
- A document confirming that you are resident in Poland.
Within 7 days of signing the contract, you must submit the ZUS ZZA Insurance Registration Form to the Social Security Institution (ZUS) branch competent for where you live, where you will be given an individual account number to pay your health insurance contributions to the Social Security Institution (ZUS).
The voluntary health insurance rate is 55.80 zloty/(PLN).
The voluntary health insurance contract is concluded for an indefinite term.
If you have completed your studies or if you are now subject to compulsory health insurance, you must terminate your current voluntary insurance cover contract at the National Health Fund.
Another / alternative solution is to conclude an insurance contract to cover the cost of treatment in Poland with any insurance company.
Please provide a copy / scan of the conclusion of the insurance contract with the National Health Fund or any insurance company to cover the cost of treatment in Poland to the Doctoral School Office.
How to use it?
We recommend ARTIMED Student Health Center or CENTERMED Student Health Center, because there you will easily find a doctor who speaks English. Please make sure to take the NFZ Agreement and last payment confirmation with you.

Very important!
Insurance in the National Health Fund cannot be duplicated. If the PhD student is insured and acquires another title to health insurance from the National Health Fund, e.g. through employment based on an employment contract, contract of mandate (in the case of people over 26), registration of own business, compulsory insurance for a working spouse / the spouse, he/she/they must immediately report this fact to the Doctoral School Office.
